Add Waist Ties to a Dress or Tunic

This pattern hack can be used to add a belt and side belt loops to a dress or tunic, such as the Breeze Shirt or Driftwood Blouse + Dress.  This is a simple way to add some waist shaping to a garment, and is a lovely detail for some extra visual interest.

There is a separate tutorial for creating an a belted A-Line Driftwood Dress here.

Please note that waist ties are for adult garments only.  Ties may pose a hazard to children and are not safety compliant in many countries.

Adding belt loops to the garment

Sew the garment as per the tutorial instructions up to sewing side seams.

Before sewing the side seams, baste the belt loops to the sides of the dress at the level of the waistline.  Or, position the belt loops lower for a dropped-waist look.

Continue sewing your garment as outlined in the pattern tutorial until complete.  Then, thread the belt through the belt loops, and voilà - a gorgeous belted tunic or dress!
