A full, glorious cloak that combines storybook sensibilities with beautiful finishes and wearability. The Cascades Cloak features a high-low waterfall hem that leaves legs free for movement. Inseam arm slits allow you to reach through without opening the front, and generous pockets are perfectly positioned for access through the slits.

It's as lovely inside as out, with neat facings, a bagged-out lining, and welted arm slits. Thread a belt through the arm slits to cinch the cloak in for a completely different look.

Wearing a cloak is a bold choice and a fabulous one - wear what makes you happy! Perfect for fantasy or historically-inspired costumes, and comfortable enough for everyday wear. It's a lovely option for pregnancy or baby-wearing too.

Add-on: Bundle with the Collars Add-on for Capes and Cloaks for six additional collar styles.

Skill level:  Intermediate

Skills you will learn: How to sew facings, bag out a lining, sew welts, and sew turned-out appliqué.

Such A Fun Cloak but Can Be Challenging!

I consider myself an experienced maker, and for the most part was able to assemble this pretty easily. The things I was a little unprepared for were the two sets of pockets as well as the lining hem that is assembled in an odd way. I’m sure it’s normal for people who have more experience than me, but I found this to be the most challenging part of the entire making process. That being said, I truly enjoy the finished product. I plan on wearing it regularly during the fall and winter months and absolutely love that it has pockets that are big enough to hold my cell phone and keys. I would definitely recommend this pattern to others who are looking for a fun alternate for a regular cloak or different wear for colder months.

A rewarding challenge

The Cascades cloak is a beautiful, full, swooshy cloak to fit your everyday fantasy needs. With the option to put pockets both in the lining and the exterior, it also comes equipped with storage, in case your adventuring outfit doesn't. The arm openings also mean you can belt it, which I quite liked. If you're thinking this is another basic cloak, I'd encourage you to reconsider, as there are enough technical aspects to make it a surprisingly challenging build (not just because of the volume of fabric involved!). As the title suggests, this cloak was worth the effort, but take your time and take advantage of all the resources the T+T team has available to assist!

Full disclosure: I received the Cascades Pattern complimentary, in exchange for joining the Sew + Show team and helping showing how the pattern works on a variety of different bodies. All opinions provided, however, are my own.

For fun, or everyday!

I love my Cascades Cloak. I used curtains and poly satin lining for mine. The sizing is easy to choose and the drape of the cascading hem line makes walking easy, no trips. The design feels elegant and the look is simple, yet beautiful. It wasn't a difficult pattern in my opinion, but you need some room for cutting out and sewing. There is a lot of yardage! I love the leaf appliques as well. If I make another I might put toggles all the way down the front and use a heavier fabric for a winter cloak. There are really so many options to change up the look of this garment. I participated in the Sew & Show part of the pattern testing for this garment and as always I'm impressed with the Twig & Tale instructions and pattern team. Great garment, great experience.

functional fairytale fashion

Caution: you will need more workspace room than you think you will for this one! But it will be worth it in the end! I love the deep pockets and adjustable placing on the arm welts that make this cloak feel very functional. I used a heavier wool blend for the exterior and the end result was super warm and cozy, perfect for fall/winter adventures.

(I received an early pattern of Cascades as part of the Sew + Show team, this review is my honest and independent opinion.)

My slowburn romance ❤️

When I got the chance to sew the Cascade Cloak as part of Sew and Show team, I was more nervous than excited. Cloaks have never been my strong suit: I could never handle that much fabric, and my results had been just messy and weird.

That made me all the more thrilled in the end. I never imagined a cloak pattern could be this complex and thought through down to the last detail. Sewing it was an experience in itself. This is definitely not a one-night stand, but a slowburn romance. I recommend sewing slowly, going step by step, and not skipping anything. I promise all the time you invest will pay off, and you'll end up with something truly exceptional.

What a cloak!

You should go into this project knowing it’ll not be a quick and easy one! I made that mistake and boy it took me by surprise! This is a very refined cloak. Twig + Tale took a lot into consideration and that is reflected in many aspects of the pattern, namely the slits for the arms, the inside AND outside pockets. I’ve learn a lot sewing this pattern and I am delighted with my cloak!
Full disclosure: I took part of the Sew + Show before the release of the pattern, I got an advanced copy in exchange of sewing the pattern and providing photos. Writing a review is my choice and this is my honest opinion.

Adding a bit of whimsy to life.

Nothing but love for this pattern! I've been wanting to make a proper cloak for a while now and just love the Cascades cloak. The hi-lo hem gives it a lovely shape and the details are well thought through. Pockets in the lining (or outer if you prefer) and armholes with welts for extra movement (or adding a belt), Cascades has it all. I love how it twirls and flows when walking, all the whimsy i could wish for!

A must make!

This cloak is everything I ever dreamed of and more! I love having the arm slits and much to my delight it has pockets- something lacking in my other cloaks. I particularly like the high low finish which makes it practical yet dramatic.
Cascades isn't a quick make, and you need to flex your muscles when it comes to the end stages as there is a lot of fabric to man - or woman-handle, but the instructions guide you through the process and as always with Twig and Tale patterns it comes together beautifully.
