Suggested Fabrics

There are a vast array of waterproof fabrics available with many different properties.  These pants are versatile in terms of the fabric used, and can be made in a light to medium weight fabric with no stretch.  We don't recommend using upholstery fabrics.  Look for fabrics that are durable and if possible, breathable.  If the person who is to wear the pants has sensory issues, take the "sound" of the fabric into consideration.  Some fabrics are "crunchier" than others and make more noise when walking.

Synthetic Fabrics: Nylon, ripstop nylon, parka nylon, aluminium-backed nylon, soft shell, light weight vinyl, PUL (we only recommend experienced sewers use PUL as it can be challenging to sew with).  If using a synthetic fabric, we recommend using 100% polyester thread.

Natural Fabrics: Oil skin, dry oil skin, regular oil cloth, waxed canvas, waxed cotton, laminated cotton.  When using these types of fabrics, regular seam sealing tape may not stick effectively.  You would need to wax the seams instead for a complete waterproofing, if desired.

Other Supplies & Notions

  • Spool of coordinating thread
  • Elastic - 1" (25mm) wide for waist, 3/4" (20mm) for ankle and stirrup
  • Large safety pin for threading elastic through
  • Optional - lightweight interfacing for front waistband (knitted or woven are best but non-woven would work)
  • Needles: 80/12 needle for light-weight fabric, 90/14 for medium-weight fabric.  if your machine struggles to get through multiple layers, then use a microtex or denim needle.

Optional:

  • For sealing seams: seam sealing tape, baking paper (parchment paper), iron and scissors.  If using an oil cloth, then beeswax for sealing.
  • Non-stick (teflon) sewing foot
  • Snaps or hook + loop tape to seal the optional pockets
