Suggested Fabrics
This dress can be made from both woven and knit fabrics, and different fabric can create quite a different look and feel to the dress. Fabrics with more drape create a softer, more casual, flowing look to the dress which are generally more suitable for the maxi length, whereas something like a quilting cotton creates a more structured version which is better suited to the shorter lengths.
Note: The Gathered Yoke version has the tendency to look “poofy” through the middle if made with a stiffer fabric such as quilting cotton, which looks very cute on toddlers. However, to avoid a “balloony” look for older children, a fabric with a little drape is recommended.
Wovens
Quilting cotton, cotton voile, cotton lawn, batiste, calico, poplin, rayon (viscose), chambray, double gauze, silk, lightweight linen, lightweight wool/merino, flannel, seersucker, homespun, crepe, lace. Flat Front version only: corduroy, lighter denims, drill, velvet.
Knits
French terry, brushed poly, interlock, sweater, sweatshirt, cotton/poly blend, waffle knit, cotton lycra, rayon, merino blends, cotton jersey.
Fabric Requirements
The below numbers indicate the dress being made full length with any strap and pocket options. You may need more if matching plaids/checks or if you have a directional fabric.

Other Supplies & Notions
- Elastic for back; Typically this calls for 1” (2.5cm) elastic, however, you can use thinner for a different look if desired. You will need between 1/2 yard/metre and 1 yard/meter depending on your chosen version and size of dress.
- Spool of coordinating thread
- Washable marker to mark the position of elastic, pockets, and snaps or buttonholes onto your fabric
- Buttons or snaps to fasten if desired
- Small amount of interfacing if applying snaps
- If making a knit version, you may need cotton tape, stay tape, or a strip of fusible web to stabilise the bodice side seams
