Frequently Asked Questions
GETTING STARTED
What makes Twig + Tale different from other pattern brands? Twig + Tale combines detailed sewing patterns with instruction designed to build real confidence, and a community that finds as much pleasure in the making as in the finished garment. Our designs carry a sense of everyday adventure; a little whimsy, rooted in real, everyday life.
Where do I start? If you're new to sewing or digital patterns, the Pixie Hat is a lovely place to begin. It's one of our simplest makes and a quick, enjoyable sew. You can also explore our free patterns as a low-risk way to get a feel for how our instructions and tutorials work before you commit to buying. If you'd like a little extra guidance, our Learn to sew series is always there to support you.
Are Twig + Tale patterns suitable for beginner sewists? Absolutely. Many of our patterns are designed with beginners in mind with detailed step-by-step instructions, photos, and video support to guide you through every stage. So even if you're just starting out, you'll find plenty to make and learn. And with a warm, encouraging community around you, you're never sewing alone. If you'd like a little extra support, our Learn to sew series is a great place to begin.
Are Twig + Tale patterns difficult to sew? It depends on the pattern! We have three skill levels - beginner, adventurous beginner, and intermediate - so there's something for every stage of your sewing journey. Whichever you choose, you'll find detailed step-by-step instructions to guide you through, so nothing ever feels out of reach.
Can Twig + Tale patterns help me improve my sewing skills? Yes, that's very much part of what we're about. Our patterns span a wide range of skill levels, so there's always a natural next step. Each one is written with enough detail and explanation that you're learning techniques as you sew, not just following steps. Many of our sewists describe working their way through our range as a genuine learning journey and with a community around you sharing tips and encouragement, you're never figuring it out alone.
ABOUT OUR PATTERNS
What is included in your patterns? Every Twig + Tale PDF pattern includes layered sizes, step-by-step instructions with photos, a condensed instruction summary, and an upcycle guide. Many patterns also include video tutorials, A0 copy shop files, and projector formats. Everything is written to feel like a guided experience, with enough detail and support that you're never left guessing. Please note that our patterns are instant digital downloads and you will not receive a paper pattern in the post.
Do the patterns include videos? Many of our patterns include video tutorials and sew-alongs to help you see exactly how things go together and build confidence as you sew. Availability is shown on each pattern listing.
What are layered pattern pieces? Layered pattern PDFs allow you to print only the sizes you need, reducing confusion and paper use. This makes cutting and sewing simpler and more efficient. Files are best opened in Adobe Acrobat Reader to access full functionality. For step by step instructions on using layers, please see this post.
Are seam allowances included in pattern pieces? Yes, all seam allowances are included in every pattern piece, usually 1cm unless otherwise specified. This allows you to focus on sewing without needing to calculate or add allowances manually.
FIT AND SIZING
How do Twig + Tale patterns fit - will they come up true to size? Our patterns are designed with generous ease for comfort and freedom of movement, so they may come up larger than you expect if you're used to standard sizing. For the best fit, we always recommend measuring your body rather than going by your usual size - all our patterns include guidance on how to do this accurately. Each pattern also includes a Finished Garment Measurements chart, which shows the ease built in at various points of the garment. This makes it easy to choose your size with confidence, or adjust if you prefer a closer or more relaxed fit.
Are your patterns size inclusive? Yes. Our patterns are designed with inclusive sizing and real body diversity in mind. Our Women's/Curved Fit size chart is available in sizes 0-38 which runs to a 65" (165cm) full chest and a 72" (183cm) hip. Our Men's/Straight Fit size chart is available in sizes 30-66 which goes to a 66" (167.5cm) chest and a 66" (167.5cm) hip. Many of our patterns have adaptable fit options to support comfort and movement. You can read more about our sizing here.
Do you offer adaptive or sensory-friendly sewing options? Many Twig + Tale designs include adaptive and sensory-friendly considerations such as modifications for wheelchair users, techniques for post-mastectomy comfort, easy-dressing adaptations and inclusive fitting methods. You can read more about our Adaptive Pattern Fitting Resources here.
PRINTING AND FILES
How do I view and print my pattern? Open files using Adobe Acrobat Reader for best results. We recommend printing just the pattern pieces and viewing the tutorial on your computer or tablet. Detailed printing instructions are included in the pattern. Patterns are designed for both A4/US Letter home printing and larger formats where available.
Do you have A0 versions of your patterns available? Many patterns include A0 copy shop files for large-format printing. Availability is listed on each pattern page, making printing easier for those who prefer not to assemble home-printed pages.
Do you have projector files in your patterns? Most newer patterns include projector files designed for no-print sewing. These are being continuously expanded to improve accessibility and convenience for modern sewing setups.
I tried printing from mobile and my pattern doesn't look right - what's happened? We recommend printing Twig + Tale patterns from a computer for best results, as mobile devices may not support scaling and layered features reliably. If needed, tools like the Sewsy app can be used as a last-resort option, but desktop printing ensures the most accurate results.
Why can't I select layers from my mobile? Most mobile PDF apps do not support layered pattern functionality. For the best experience, we recommend using a desktop device. This ensures correct scaling, full access to layers, and accurate assembly.
SUSTAINABILITY AND WELLBEING
How do Twig + Tale patterns support more sustainable sewing? We think about waste at every stage. Pattern pieces are laid out carefully to make the most of your fabric, and many designs are perfect for upcycling - wool blankets, old garments, fabric scraps. Projector files mean no printing at all if you own one. And because our garments are made to fit well and last, they tend to get worn for years - the opposite of fast fashion.
Is sewing with Twig + Tale good for your wellbeing? We believe sewing is an act of love - for yourself, or for someone you're making for. We're advocates for slow sewing: taking your time, being present in the making, and finding the creativity and calm that comes with it. It's a skill that nurtures as much as it produces.

Please note that the gift cards are digital, not physical items. If you wish to arrange a specific pattern as a gift, please contact support@twigandtale.com and we can make the arrangements with you.
Why have I been charged more for my purchase? All our prices are in USD, so if you're paying in another currency your payment provider may apply a conversion fee. This is outside our control, but checking out in USD where possible can help minimise any additional charges.
What is your refund policy? As our patterns are instant digital downloads, we're unable to offer refunds once a purchase has been made. That said, if you have any trouble accessing your files, please do get in touch at support@twigandtale.com and we'll make sure you get everything you need.
